The journey of an NQT...Daniell Evans - Part 2
As we check in to see how our NQTs are getting one amid this time of national crisis, we talk with Daniell Evans, PE teacher at ̨swag Academy Acklam to discuss his teaching journey so far.
̨swag.com: Hi Daniell, thanks for taking the time to talk with us again! Obviously it’s a very strange time at the minute. So first, how were you getting on, prior to the closures, with the latest phase of your NQT year?
“Hi! It’s great to be chatting with you again. Well, to be honest I was having a really good spell. I found that I was learning all the time and adapting, however at the same time I can be honest and admit it has been difficult being more independent but whenever I need help the PE team is there to go to for that help.”
Sounds like it was going well. So how have you coped with the recent Coronavirus pandemic and the closure of schools?
“I think I have coped well with it for the most part. It has obviously been hard not having the usual daily routine and teaching everyday, but it has given me a chance to reflect on my teaching and look more into sports that I teach and improve my knowledge and ideas.”
That’s a positive way to use this time. How have you gone about adapting and finding a new daily routine for this period?
“I have been inside, as we have been advised to be, but also going for a daily walk during our permitted hour, and setting myself some structure to keep my day ticking over. I communicate with friends, family and the PE team on a daily basis too to get that interaction up.”
That’s good then. Finally, how are ̨swag continuing to support you with your NQT year despite the current circumstances?
“As I’ve mentioned before, the team at the academy have been great supporting me. Also the ̨swag Family are offering CPD to us and helping with lessons online when and where necessary, which is incredibly helpful.”
Thank you for your time, Daniell.
