Guyvin Dawkins, 14 and Jay Coulson, 13 who train at The Combat Academy in Barugh Green, both left the competition with medal wins in kickboxing. Guyvin has been kickboxing for ten years, first starting at The Combat Academy as part of their ‘Little Ninjas’ children’s programme. Speaking of his achievement, he said:
“I’m Really happy and proud about my win but also humble as I am aware of how high the standard of fighters was and there were many that I admire.
“Competing at a world championship has always been a goal of mine, now that I’ve accomplished that, I’ll be working on getting my 2nd Dan black belt.”
The championship event saw attendance of national teams from across six continents, with England finishing fourth on the medal table behind Germany, Ukraine and Portugal. Jay, who brought home a silver medal commented:
“I was ecstatic to get through the first round and was ready to fight for the gold. I’m incredibly proud of myself for being able to finish the tournament with a silver.”
The Combat Academy was founded in 2011 by former professional, British, European & world kickboxing champion Mick Crossland and now has three locations - Barnsley, Chesterfield and Northampton.
