A Teesside teenager has been praised by a local MP in Parliament due to his outstanding contribution to a local residential care home.

Daniel Sillett, 15, has been hard at work making PPE supplies using his 3D printer which he has donated to Marske Hall residential care home.

Since then, Daniel’s work has grown and he has now supplied around 600 face shields to over 20 institutions around the North East. Having just received a new printer, Daniel now hopes to produce more PPE for those that are in need of it.

Daniel, a student at ̨��swag Academy Bydales, said:

“It is a very uncertain time at the minute and I just wanted to help and do my bit really. I am fortunate to have a 3D printer so I just thought I’d put it to good use.

“There’s been a lot in the media about PPE shortages, so I thought I could make what I could and donate them to a local care home. The people working there are doing so much good and deserve all the praise.”

The generous teenager was praised by Jacob Young MP during a session in Parliament this week. 

The MP for Redcar asked the Health Minister, Jo Churchill MP, during a Commons session on Social Care: Personal Protective Equipment, if she would join him in praising Daniel for his efforts during this time of national crisis.

The Health Minister responded: “I would indeed like to join my hon. Friend in congratulating them, and I congratulate him on the way he has just explained that this is the most enormous national effort, from large-scale businesses down to individuals such as Daniel, to whom we must ​give our special thanks.”

The Redcar MP and the Health Minister are not the only ones who are full of praise for Daniel, with his academy principal also praising him.

Seana Rice, Principal at ̨��swag Academy Bydales, said:

“We are so proud of Daniel. The recognition and praise he is getting is well deserved and the whole academy wants to add their collective voice to it and say one big ‘thank you’ to Daniel for his brilliant work.”

Speaking about the positive impact of Dan’s donation, Karen Hutchinson, manager at Marske Hall Care Home, is reported as saying: "This really has made a difference to the staff and service users. It's making sure that people feel reassured and are far more efficient in infection control.

"People like Dan are certainly working towards keeping Coronavirus out of our building and away from our service users and staff.

"It just shows the maturity of young people. I would like to thank Daniel on behalf of everyone here at Marske Hall."

Finally on social media, the Valorum Foundation tweeted: "Absolutely fantastic to hear Dan get the credit in the House of Commons for creating face visors for care workers at Marske Hall.”
